Don't Forget the Final Step: the Thank You Note
You sent in your resume for The Perfect Job. Out of hundreds of applicants (and days of nail-biting suspense), you got the callback. After tons of research and preparation, you went through a grueling interview. So now all you have to do is wait for the offer, right? WRONG. Thank you notes are a crucial part of the interview process!
A good thank you note doesn’t simply thank your interviewer for their time: it solidifies your interest in the opportunity and addresses anything you felt you may have not answered well. It’s important to send your note within 24 hours of your interview, whether handwritten or via email.
Here are some thank you note tips to help you finish wow-ing your interviewer:
Make it personal
You should always mention memorable moments of your conversation, whether it is something personal your interviewers brought up about themselves or an interesting fact you’re excited about regarding the company itself.
Fix your interview mistakes
We’ve all walked out of interviews thinking about how we could have answered that one question so much better. If there is a specific answer you wish you could change, this can be a good opportunity to readdress the topic and clarify your response.
Show your value
After your interview, you now have better idea about the role and what they’re looking for - so use this note to show them why you are the best fit for the job! Talk about specific skills in order to give them an idea of how you will immediately add value to their organization. Don’t be afraid to give examples that prove you will be a stand-out hire.
Here’s an example:
Dear [hiring manager],
Thank you so much for taking the time to meet with me this morning for your Administrative Assistant position. I thoroughly enjoyed learning more about your trajectory through the company from front-desk receptionist to HR Manager. It was also interesting to hear more about the company’s expansion into China. (making it personal!)
After our conversation about organizational skills, I would like to add that in my current role I use a variety of methods to keep on track of my tasks, such as taking notes, making to-do lists, and setting calendar reminders. I am confident that I will be able to juggle multiple priorities in your fast-paced office. (fixing your mistakes: add more detail about a question!)
This role requires someone with great attention to detail, exceptional communication skills, and a passion for technology. Given my proven track record of administrative support success, as well as my love for all things tech, I know that I can add immediate value to your team. (show your value!)

A good thank you note leaves a good impression with your interviewer and can help “seal the deal” on whether or not you’ll move forward with the interview process. Be enthusiastic, be genuine, and best of all, be ready for your next interview!
